UNIT 5
READING
Reading is one of the four skills we have in English,
this is a receptive skill the same as listening. I am totally sure that reading and writing are
subjects that go together because to accomplish any of them we must have a good
level of knowledge and as in the TKT
book suggest that “we need to understand the language of the text at word
level, sentence level or whole text level” (Mary Spratt, 2014) . Moreover if we
just imagine any text immediately a long text with full letters appear that’s why
some of us do not like to read at all. But we have to understand that discourse is connected by grammar, lexis and our knowledge.
Another important aspect is that we need to see the connection between
sentences which is called coherence and the grammatical links between sentences
which is known as cohesion.
From the same token, we can find some
subskills into the reading skill: reading for specific information which is scanning reading for detail, deducing
meaning from context, understanding text structure, reading for gist (skimming)
inferring and predicting. Each one of these subskills help us to understand
that when we read we do it for any specific purpose like for example when we read a section of
the newspaper it could be to find a job or another section just to know about
the news.
In short, a good reader must be able to
understand any text
type because it help us to be good writers and being a good writer
includes knowing that texts have different lengths and layouts.and that is a
good idea to encourage our little children to read a lot through pictograms and then making them read more complicated readings
depending on their level of knowledge.
