MODULE 1
PART 1DESCRIBING LANGUAGE AND LANGUAGE SKILLS
UNIT 1 GRAMMAR
Grammar is focused on the combination, organization of words or parts of words, words or groups of words to make meaning. As we know since we learn to speak we use grammar unconsciously also in our cases as English teachers when we teach the language and it is important to refer to its forms and use of it. However, grammar is the science of language and the art of using it. (Covell, 1865) It means that we have to know all the grammatical forms which refers how words are formed by and presented when a person speak or write. Moreover, we can find grammatical forms in the nine parts of speech that we have in English: nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, determiners, prepositions, conjunctions and exclamations. The function of each part of speech is to describe the performance of words in a sentence or phrase. In addition, grammatical structures and words that contain prefixes which are group of letters added at the beginning of a base word and suffixes which is a group of words added at the end of the base word.
To sum
up, I may say that we as English teacher should apply this knowledge through real
examples making our students understand that grammar rules help us to know how
language works. I also would like to teach my students in a complete and
organized way that is why I would like be guided by an interesting book called
the elements of English grammar by William Barnes who says that “Grammar is
divided into four parts, Orthography, etymology, syntax and prosody” (Barnes, 1842)
