Unit 7 listening
Listening is
another receptive skill
in this case with listening
we are responding to language instead of producing it. Listening is related
to meaningful sounds of
the language. There are famous authors who establish many definitions about
what listening is like for example Lisa Downs says that “the word listening is
defined as making an effort to hear something: to pay attention or heed. It is
different from hearing, which is the psychological process of the ear absorbing
sound waves and transferring them along neutral pathways to parts of the brain.
” (Downs, 2008) I agree with this
statement because listening is to pay attention in order to understand what
others say. At this point, it is relevant to mention that listening
involves understanding of spoken language, because it is generally less planned
and it is not mandatory to structure as in the case of writing language. As can
notice when we speak it is difficult to organize properly our ideas or because
on the interaction
we can say incomplete sentences or utterances, hesitations simple grammar and general vocabulary so
in some cases it can cause misunderstanding because of some inappropriate words
that we can use unconsciously. The same
as in the other skills, listening also has different subskills : listen for gist/global understanding, specific
information detail
or to infer attitude. In listening we also have listening intensively and extensively. It depends on
the amount of information we need to listen for. i would like to teach listening to my students through interesting games such as "which one is it" a funy game in which students should identify different words with similar spelling.
